| Accidently added 300 ml (about 10 U.S. fluid ounces) of SAE 80W90 gear oil to the Steering Housing instead of the Power Steering Cylinder Housing. The Operator's Manual says the Steering Housing requires SAE 140. Unfortunately, I can't find a drain plug on the housing. Questions: Will the SAE 80W90 oil damage the steering gears quickly and if so, what is the recommended procedure for flushing and replacing the lower weight oil? | |

| My 1010 has manual steering but on the steering housing it appears to have a drain plug on the bottom right of the first photo of the page. I look in the parts and repair manual and could not find any info about draining and flushing the gearbox. | |

| Thx very much JD 1010 RU! (Can't believe you replied so quickly!)
In my tractor, it seems JD did not drill and tap the drain hole, and the photo in my Operator's Manual confirms that this is as John Deere intended. (The casting clearly includes provision for drilling and tapping a drain hole in that lower right location.
I have a picture but will have to learn how to post an image.

| The nameplate on the right side of the engine says it is a Series 1010 U, Serial # 56453, built in Dubuque, Iowa.
I've always understood that it is a 1964 model.

| Based on your serial# your 1010 is a 1965, built in the last year of the production before being discontinued.
Year built / Serial Numbers 1960: 10001 1961: 13692 1962: 23630 1963: 32188 1964: 43900 1965: 53722 (Your Serial #56453 is after 53,000 so its a 1965) Final: 57312

| Thx JD 1010 RU,
It's great to know it's a 1965 and especially useful when ordering parts. My family must have bought it in 1965 and so I'll have to revise my memory of that purchase a little bit.
