OH BOY!! I GOT ONE!!! Empty
PostSubject: OH BOY!! I GOT ONE!!!   OH BOY!! I GOT ONE!!! EmptySun Jul 08, 2012 3:11 pm

Sorry for the shouting!
I just bought a 1964, John Deere 1010... Serial 1010U 43637.(Diesel) Do not know much about them but it came with all the original Manuals, a 36A Loader and a Brush hog for the rock bottom price of $2200.00 oh ya and a counter balance..Garage sale find post divorce(not mine ..the seller)

It runs drives and all, buckets both Pto's all work and are in really good shape!! The bad... was a cracked radiator and a wobbly water pump and the clutch will not disengage, I can change gears when it is powered off. ???????? so far this week bought a new water pump and got the radiator repaired, waiting for the water pump to put it all back together and go to work!! Is there something I need to know about the clutch?? I am thinking that the zert was never greased and that will be my starting point.. All help is appreciated!!

Can ANYONE tell me what I have here for sure I am having a hard time finding info on just the U model... every tractor seems to be a RU or RUS , we are just a lowly U ;}
Will use this great machine until we can do a full restoration on it!! Purrs like a kitten and we are really happy with it as our budget for a strong farm runner was about 35-4500 and now we have a little extra to make it all great.
Looking forward to watching and listening here to all of the great info !! Glad to have found you!

I'd try starting it in gear with the clutch pressed. If that doesn't break it loose try accelerating and slowing rapidly. This assumes the clutch is properly adjusted. You should feel about 3/4" of play in the pedal before the it gets stiff.

I look forward to learning about the solution to your shifting problem. I have a similar problem with my 1010, except that it shifts fine when the engine is cold, but then is very hard to shift or won't shift when the engine gets hot.

I suggest that you get a John Deere 1010 Repair Manual and a Parts Manual. You can either get them off ebay or directly from a John Deere dealer. They are indispensible.

As for the radiator question, I just took the radiator out of my 1964 1010 gasoline RUS, which may be completely different from your U diesel. I also had to replace the seals on my steering gear when I was in there. I ended up having to remove the hood, steering column, front axle, and steering gear to get to the radiator. Hopefully yours will be easier.

Sounds like you got a great deal, by the way, even if you have to put a bunch of money into it. My RUS has no loader, but I wish it did.
