Hi everyone.
I purchased a JD 1010 wheel tractor with a loader and backhoe a few months ago. Finally have some time to tinker on it. Runs pretty good but has a transmission issue. Grind pretty bad when it's moving. I recently removed the backhoe unit so I could get it in my barn for the winter. Now I can dump the trany and final drive fluids so I can start poking around to figure out what needs fixing. A nice winter project. I hope to have it sorted by spring 2013.
This is my first 1010. Already have a 1020. The family had a '46 B for awhile. I also have a International TD-6 dozer, and a MM 335. I also have a MF 35 combine in addition to a few other farm implements. Oh...I'm also a Gravely enthusiast.

I have the parts manual and have searched out all the bearings, seals and gaskets to overhaul the entire trany and final drives. Pretty much all of the items are available through John Deere. What really surprised me was all of the items through John Deere came to roughly $800. I thought that was pretty reasonable when you see what a list of items that is. But I'm hoping that is a worst case situation. Just preparing myself. But with any luck it won't be to bad. I do need to replace quite a few of the seals. The axles seals are leaking as well as the ones behind the brakes. I'm pretty sure I have to replace the brakes discs as well. I'll find out once I get into it more. I'm sure it will prove to be an adventure.

Thanks for the photo. Good to have a reference of a good trany to compare to.
I just checked your youtube link. Pretty cool. It appears that you have the tinkering bug too.

I'm back. Finally. It's been a while but I'm finally getting a chance to work on my 1010 wheel tractor. In the fall of 2012 I removed the backhoe and put the tractor in the barn to work on the transmission. After draining the oil/water out of all of the trany and final drives I started to do some exploratory digging. turns out both of the bearings on the top left hand shaft of the trany were missing all of their cage and rollers. Most of the gears looked usable but at that time I wasn't sure.
That was about as far as I got when things got bogged down. Between cold weather, my fathers ill health and passing and then my own issues I have managed to get the final drives and trany off the tractor and the trany broken down. Yup, rollers all of the bottom of the case. What a sight. Not a happy one. But what I have to deal with.
With the trany part it looks like most of the gears will be salvageable. I may have to replace one shaft and a gear cluster but I'm not sure yet. I'll know better once I get things more broken down and examined. I don't plan on using this thing day in and day out so I think if I can piece it together to be serviceable. That will work for me. I don't ever expect it to be perfect. The backhoe is the more important part for me.
